Why do websites such as Bebo and MySpace use servers? What do the servers do?
Why do Bebo/MySpace use Servers?
Servers keep data in one place where everyone else can find it easily and consistently.
Most people don't have any way to store data so that everyone on the Internet can see it easily. Do you know how to make something appear to other Internet users? How to direct them to your computer to see something? Most people don't.
So instead, people create servers and copy all the data there so that there's a common place for everyone to go find it, and the name stays the same.
It also allows for the profiles to all look the same. If you and I both wanted to put information about ourselves online, it's unlikely that we'd come up with the same page format or the same details to show to the public.
MySpace servers give people a way to put all the same details out there in a way that's easy to read. From one profile to the next, you know how to figure out what you want to know, because it shows up in the same place every time on each page (or pretty close!).
Server technology helps to make that happen.
